摘要

When Walter Chrysler entered the low-price market with his four-cylinder Plymouth in summer 1928, Henry Ford was heard to admonish, “Walter, you’ll go broke. Chevrolet and I have that market all sewed up!” While Ford may have been trying to put on a good poker face, in reality Chevrolet had recently knocked Ford out of first place in the annual sales race and Willys-Overland's Whippet was sinking fast, so the field was ripe for another entry. After capturing just 1.5 percent of the market in its first year, Plymouth would be firmly in third place by 1931 and help push Chrysler Corporation ahead of Ford Motor Company in total sales by 1933.
