A Cognitive Linguistics View of Terminology and Specialized Language

The book under review is the 20th volume in the Series Applications of Cognitive Linguistics (ACL) edited by Gitte Kristiansen and Francisco J. Ruiz de Mendoza Ibanez. The mix of the 23 titles published in this series to date displays the impressive breadth of the field of 'Applied Cognitive Linguistics'. The themes covered range from pedagogical concerns, through issues in translation, grammar points, ubiquitous metaphor, space, creativity, ethnic and cultural topics, leading up to AI. The volume focuses on one of the harder applications of language and linguistics, namely specialized language. This term is preferred by the authors to language for specific purposes, commonly used in the literature (p. 1). A rare combination, the project merges the disciplines of Cognitive Linguistics with "specialized language in general" (p. 1) and with one of the fields of specialized language - Terminology, in particular. It is "the importance of Cognitive Linguistics for Terminology and specialized language in general" (p. 1; italics added) that the book explores.
