INCREASING CBRN PROFICIENCY WITH DUAL-PURPOSE TRAINING SI THE COMPANY LEVEL

Annual chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) training objectives are standardized in Section 4-13, "Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense Training," Army Regulation (AR) 350-1, Army Training and Leader Development. But as a CBRN officer who has been assigned to non-CBRN units, I have often seen CBRN training overlooked due to priorities or the lack of time. Fortunately, it is not necessary for company level units to wait for major CBRN training events to accomplish the specified training objectives. Company leaders can develop CBRN skills by incorporating simulators, making dual-purpose use of routine training events, and avoiding common CBRN training pitfalls. As the CBRN officer for 1st Battalion, 38th Field Artillery Regiment, 210th Fires Brigade, 2d Infantry Division, Camp Casey, South Korea, I have been using these practices for the past year to better prepare companies for the culminating CBRN exercise known as Steel Zenith.
