The word 'liveable' denotes a desirable quality of life, economlcrnsoundness, social health and environmental viability. Liveable citiesrnare human oriented, environmentally friendly, economically viable,rnefficient and socially sound. Fundamental to the generation of suchrna liveable environment is the integration of transport and land usernplanning to ensure the production of development scaled to humanrnneeds, with excellent access to public transport and non-motorisedrntransport facilities, while allowing an appropriate level of car access.rnGovernment's policies are to encourage public transport, walkingrnand cycling over the use of the private car. This article demonstratesrnhow a coordinated spatial, urban design and transport planningrnapproach can provide a transport system that will reduce the presentrnexcessive dependence on the private car while providing a morernefficient transportation service that supports, rather than impedingrnthe development of a liveable community.
