As the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's AirTrain JFK enters its second year of service, construction continues on the project's most demanding component: the Jamaica AirTrain Terminal Complex. The New York Airport Access Program (NYAAP)—one of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's largest transportation improvement initiatives ever-is located at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), which serves more than 34 million passengers each year, supports a tourism industry worth $15 billion a year, and plays a significant role in making New York City the financial capital of the world. The airport is situated in the borough of Queens approximately 15 mi (24 km) southeast of midtown Manhattan. Unfortunately, it can be reached by only two major roadways: the Van Wyck Expressway from the north and the Belt Parkway from the west. Both are notoriously congested 24 hours a day seven days a week as they seek to serve airline travelers as well as local residents of the densely populated area. The NYAAP's primary objective is to provide an alternative means of access into and out of jfk for tourists, residents, and business travelers, reducing their reliance on automobiles and buses.
