Although more women are working in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) than ever before, they con-rntinue to be significantly outnumbered byrntheir male counterparts. In I960, for in-stance, the proportion of women in engi-rnneering was just 1 percent, and by 2000rnthat figure had risen to only about 11rnpercent. While it is unclear exactlyrnwhy women remain a minority inrnSTEM, a report from the American Association of University Women entitled Why So Few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics highlights eight recent research findings that point to particular social, cultural, educational, and self-confidence factors that may be hindering some women from pursuing careers in those fields.
