Coal Companies Must Upgrade Wastewater Treatment Systems As Part of Settlement

As part of a recent settlement with the federal government, one of the largest U.S. coal companies-Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., of Bristol, Virginia-will have to overhaul its efforts and the efforts of its nearly 70 affiliates to treat wastewater from mining operations in several Appalachian states. The settlement also includes the largest civil penalty ever assessed under section 402 of the Clean Water Act, which regulates the discharge of pollutants from point sources into waters of the United States.
