In this paper, the design problems and applications of thenfractional Hilbert transformer (FHT) are investigated. First, thenconventional Hilbert transformer is generalized to FHT. Itsncorresponding analytic signal is also defined to construct ansingle-sideband (SSB) signal for saving communication bandwidth. Then,nseveral methods are presented to design finite and infinite impulsenresponse FHTs including the Hilbert transformer-based method, all-passnfilter-based method, optimization methods, etc. Next, we propose ansecure SSB communication in which the fractional order of FHT is used asna secret key for demodulation. Finally, the two-dimensional FHT is usednto detect edges or corners of digital images
