It is generally accepted that dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) is one of the most effective techniques in saving energy consumption. This work addresses an important DVS problem, which is the transition energy-aware voltage assignment (TE-VA) problem. Given a schedule of tasks, the TE-VA problem is to determine the voltages to be applied to the tasks, so that the total energy consumption including the transition energy is minimized. Our work has two contributions: 1) we claim that the TE-VA problem for a single task is optimally solvable in polynomial time; 2) We propose a technique for solving the TE-VA problem for multiple tasks by translating the TE-VA problem into the transition interval allotment problem.
