Effect of Spermidine on the Regulation of Senescence of Litchi Fruit and Its Relation to Ethylene

Litchi fruit (cv Huaizhi) in China was used for understanding effect of spermidine on the regulation of senescence and its relation to ethylene. There were high contents of PUT, SPD arid SPM at harvest, they decreased gradually later, whereas membrane permeability and ethylene evolution increased during storage. Treatment with spermidine at 10 mmol/L delayed the increase of membrane permeability and maintained a higher ratio of UFA to SFA, but it didn' t have a clear effect on ethylene evolution 3and 5 days after harvest. MGBG increased membrane permeability without altering ethylene evolution. Ethrel or AVG treatment was associated respectively with high or low level of membrane permeability, but low or high level of polyamine. It was suggestedthat SPD could regulate senescence through the effect on membrane system, and then affect ethylene evolution indirectly. Conversely, the latter might regulate the action of polyamines.
