Idealism under Pressure: China's Foreign Policy Principles and the Korean Peninsula Crisis

The situation on the Korean peninsula has exposed China's diplomatic weakness and lack of creativity in its future role in the East Asian community. China seemed unclear about its foreign policy goals at the beginning of the 21 st century. The government hoped to manage the North Korea nuclear crisis by using peaceful means and following peaceful principles. The desire to be different from the West and to play a leadership role in regional affairs led China to become the major mediator and facilitator in North Korea nuclear negotiations. The Chinese government believed that the nuclear crisis could be resolved with Chinese wisdom and active diplomacy. Beijing hoped that by supporting the regime in Pyongyang with material assistance, it could induce North Korea to make concessions.
