"Its very existence tends to give legit-imacy to some very strange stuff," says Robert L. Park about the National Institutes of Health's Office of Alternative Medicine (OAM). Park, a University of Maryland, College Park, physicist, and other prominent scientists also argue in letters to Rep. John E. Porter (R-Ill.) that OAM is sullying the good name of NTH and OAM's funding ought to be drastically cut or eliminated entirely. Their critical letters hit Porter's desk just before his appropriations subcommittee was to take up NIH's funding for fiscal 1998. The scientists contend that Porter is sympathetic to their concerns. And the congressman's press secretary, David Kohn, confirms this, telling C&EN that Porter "takes their concerns very seriously and is looking into the issue."
