Two distinct hydrogen-bonding modes, end-on and end-to-end coordination, have been observed in the complexation between macrocycles and polyatomic anions such as azide and oxoanions.rnThe design and synthesis of anion receptors is a topic of current interest in supramolecular chemistry. A large variety of anion receptors capable of binding and sensing an anion through polar interactions in particular hydrogen bonds have been prepared for the last two decades. It has been now realised that there exist some analogies between anion recognition chemistry and transition metal coordination chemistry in several aspects including the coordination number and geometry.
