The Greek goddess Iris used a rainbow to travel between heaven and earth. But while the graceful flowers of the iris family occur in many colours, the only common iris native to Britain is the stately Yellow Flag Iris that grows in damp places and along water margins.rnThe attractive flower was worn as an heraldic device by the Frankish King Clovis in the Fifth Century and may be the basis of the fleur-de-lys emblem of French royalty.
