Arriving at Gayton Marina on the Grand Union I feel frazzled after a high pressure week at work. I'm told that a few days on the canals living life at 4mph will soon sort me out. We'll see. All sorts of things are running through my mind. Surely you need years to master the skills of steering of a boat; 1 mean, it takes ages to learn how to drive a car (well for me anyway). I had never even stepped foot on a boat and the hire company was just about to let me take their expensive, massive (to me, anyway) boat off for three days, they must be mad. My partner Phil and his parents, Brian and Gwyneth, have joined me for this three-night break and we check in and immediately buy a map of the Grand Union to find out where we're going. We're heading south from Northampton to Great Linford.
