A scheme to demolish post Second World War bungalows and replace them with modern housing could help to reinstate a critical 'missing link' section of the Chesterfield Canal. Following the collapse of Norwood Tunnel in 1908 the west end of the canal fell derelict, and in the 1970s a housing estate was built on the filled-in route through Killamarsh. When the Chesterfield Canal Trust began to restore the canal, reopening along the original line was considered impracticable so plans for building a diversion were developed, making use of available undeveloped land.
