Dunnocks are the original LBJs -Little Brown Jobs - of the bird world: their name comes from the Old English "dunnakos", meaning "little brown one".Also sometimes called hedge sparrows, they are not sparrows at all but the only accentor to live in lowland areas. They are commonly found in hedgerows, hopping and shuffling around in mouse-like fashion on the ground below the vegetation, feeding on insects, worms and small seeds. Their thin black bill, designed for wheedling out small insects, distinguishes them from female house sparrows with their chunkier bills.
