1 How did you first get involved in canals? The Duke of Bridgewater was interested in building one, together with his land agent John Gilbert. I was draining a colliery nearby and knew about water - and was made consulting engineer. 2 How many miles of canal were you responsible for? Altogether about 350 miles. 3 Which was your most difficult canal to build? My Grand Trunk from the Trent to the Mersey - especially cutting through difficult rock at Harecastle: the millstone grits, the Rowley rag, and the quicksands. It took 11 years.
