摘要

After the first issue of California wild appeared, we, those people whose names appear in the adjacent column, spent our time alternately accepting plaudits and hunkering down under our desks. The varied response is reflected in our "Letters" page. It was gratifying to read that the new title struck a chord with so many people. But I was sorry not to know that poet Diane di Prima was among our subscribers, until she wasn't. And the concern of some Academy Fellows, including James Kelley, Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at San Francisco State University, that we will become too provincial, is understandable. They fear that we will ignore scientific discoveries and intriguing life forms found further afield. I hope our performance will prove otherwise.
