Ibecame even more closely involved with Leyland National after being appointed company secretary of Leyland Truck & Bus in March 1971. Leyland was a major exporter of buses. At that time, around the world, there were probably only 20 countries capable of building chassis or complete integral vehicles. Around another 40 could build bodywork on imported purpose-built chassis, as distinct from truck-derived chassis. Most countries had a vested interest in supporting their local industries, therefore there was either a complete ban, or very high import duties, on fully built up products.
