Centre doors reduce dwell time

It is always a surprise to me that, apart from in London, few British buses have centre exits. It would significantly speed up dwell time at stops if they did. Not long ago we were on a crowded bus from the centre of Cambridge to the railway station. Finding at the last moment that most passengers were not alighting, it was a struggle to move along all the way to the front to be able to get off before it started moving again.
