Transnet is also investigating the possibility of developing a new coal export terminal at Richards Bay, mainly to serve empowerment coal mining firms. RBCT handled 68.3 Mt of coal in 2012, well under its handling capacity of 91 Mtpa. But demand has increased this year and Transnet is confident that new mines in Botswana and South Africa will require additional capacity at the port. Unlike SA's other main port facilities, the existing terminal is owned and operated by the main mining firms that use it, but state-owned Transnet wants to develop the new terminal itself.
