Russian firm Rusal has suspended plans for a new aluminium smelter, railway and port terminal in Guinea. The company, which already mines and refines bauxite in the West African state, had planned to develop the US$4-5B project over the next five years but appears to have been put off by political uncertainty. Hopes for democratic government were high when President Lansana Conte died in 2008 but progress has been slow and successive governments have ordered reviews of mining concessions and contracts.
