Transnet backs empowerment

South African transport utility Transnet has announced that most of the coal, iron ore and passenger rolling stock for its fleet upgrades will be produced within the country by consortia including black empowerment companies. Almost all public and private sector firms must allocate fixed proportions of their procurement budgets to suppliers that are majority owned by black South Africans. However, par-astatal companies like Transnet want to drive up these quotas, particularly in manufacturing and engineering.
