Clarifying intentions: the Design Quality Indicator

That the Design Quality Indicator (DQI) currently occupies an imprecise position between being a too! for measuring and being a tool for enabling dialogue has been noted by some of those involved (Gann and Whyte, 2003) and acknowledged by commentators (Markus, 2003; Dewulf and Van Meel, 2004). This Forum explores whether and to what extent the design measurement and dialogue support are contradictory aims. Some implications of this are suggested for the continued development of the DQI. En route, it will be necessary to respond in outline to some of the previous commentaries made in the pages of Building Research & Information, 2003, 31(5), and 2004, 32(3).
