England director of academic engagement Janet Askew has succeeded Cath Ranson as Royal Town Planning Institute president with a commitment to promote planning's ability to address social inequality. In her inaugural speech, Ms Askew said there are opportunities to promote planning through education, community planning and internationally. She bemoaned a 20-year downward trend in undergraduate numbers, especially among home students, to the point some universities now have more overseas undergraduates. "You are the policy makers of the future and you don't need to follow the status quo but challenge it," she advised young planners. "The future of planning is in the hands of the young planners, and we must do all we can to make planning an attractive career option for potential students."
