Aging and the disorders of later life are separate entities. Both are under genetic control. Aging involves defects in mitochondrial DNA which promote oxidative stress mediated cell damage. Age related disorders such as Alzheimer's disease are due to the effect of inherited genetic risk factors. Life span is determined by the effects of genetic risks associated with age and disease.
