International expertise makes NY conference truly global

Bridge safety and durability were two of the key themes presented to international delegates at the Sixth New York City Bridge Conference which was held in July. Bridge Engineering Association chairman and conference organiser, Khaled Mahmoud, kicked off proceedings with a sobering reflection on the number of bridge collapses that had occurred around the world in the two years since the previous event. This theme was further highlighted by one of the keynote speakers, Myint Lwin, who is director of the Office of Bridge Technology at the Federal Highway Administration. Lwin explained how the four US federal government priorities of safety, economic health, sustainability and liveability could be applied to bridge management.
