China soars, Europe stalls, the US treads water Brian Caplen

China strengthens, Europe falls, the US holds ON. That in a nutshell is the story of this year's Top 1000 World Bank rankings. It has been the trend for some time but now a five-year comparison shows just how far things have gone. In the 2007 ranking, European banks accounted for 58% of the total assets of the Top 1000 banks and 46% of the profits. In the 2012 ranking, European banks account for 45% of the assets but only 6.3% of the profits. By contrast, five years ago Chinese banks were contributing only 4.6% of total profits on 6.2% of the total assets. Today they have transformed this into 29.3% of profits on 13.6% of assets.
