The political climate for banks has been fairly negative since the financial crisis. But nowhere has the outcome been as serious as in eastern Europe, where alongside the standard bank levies and taxes, foreign currency mortgages have been swapped at old exchange rates and in Romania borrowers can walk away from troublesome mortgages and leave the banks to sort out the problem.
