Wave power can be categorised into electricity generation, which can be used for general power requirements, hydrogen cracking from water and water desalination and water pumping (into reservoirs). Typically, moderate ocean swells in deep water, a few kilometres off a coastline, have a wave height of around three metres and a wave period of around eight seconds. Such waves have the capacity to generate around 36kW per metre of coastline.
