For an all-too-brief time, my direct boss was Frank Collins. Frank was one of the giants in tuberculosis research, a wonderful scientist as well as a kind and thoughtful man, a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was also a funny and colorful Australian, and one of his many pithy sayings that has stayed with me was, "If you don't asks, you don't gets." How true that is! We all wish those around us to pay attention to our needs, but.....depending on others can be uncertain, to put it mildly.
