Just two words — I heard them when I was sitting in on a summer course on Biology of Memory. The lecturer was trying to engage the students in the discussion by directly asking them questions. When one of the students in the spotlight hesitated, lacking confidence in her answer, the instructor kindly urged, "Be bold." I immediately wrote this comment down on my notepad, right next to the diagram showing the relationship between short-term and long-term memory. A simple piece of advice, but some people find boldness an elusive trait. I can only speak from my own experience, but I certainly feel that I have a tendency to favor caution over boldness.
