MAINTAINING PROFICIENCY

For about three years I was in a business flying environment, logging about 300 hours a year averaging two round-trip flights a week. Much of the flying in the southeastern United States was in "actual" instrument weather, and at my home airport if I flew an approach it turned into a missed approach about one-third of the time. During this time I established a routine to stay sharp. I simply rotated technique: one time I hand-flew the approach ("raw data"), the next I hand-flew using the flight director, and the third I flew coupled to the autopilot. Then I'd go back to a hand-flown approach.
