Air Defence Mosaic

A large mosaic honouring past and present airmen and women was unveiled at a special dedication event at Redcar Cemetery, North Yorkshire on September 1. It depicts a Sopwith Camel, Spitfire and Eurofighter Typhoon. Sited in the old section of the cemetery, it was commissioned by Friends of Redcar Cemetery (FORC) which raised £3,000 to have it created by artist John Todd. A FORC spokesman explained: "Within the cemetery we have 47 war graves, and some of them are flyers from World War Two. We also have First World War flying officers in family graves here. We already have army and navy memorials, so we thought it was time for an RAF one too."
