Man Portable Air Defence System Mobile Air Defence for Point Defence

The need to provide a layered, in-depth air defence coverage for static installations as well as mobile ground formations and rapid deployment forces has led many countries to the large-scale acquisition of Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS), particularly Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPADS). VSHORADS and MANPADS are an essential and integral component of all modern air defence systems and operate independently or in conjunction with other air defence assets including combat aircraft, anti-aircraft guns and Direct Energy Weapons (DEW). Designed as a surface-to-air missile system that can be carried by a soldier, MANPADS are used in varying types of defence, which include area defence, point defence, route defence, and mobile defence. The main features of modern MANPADS are longer range, improved guidance and seeker systems, and greater lethality in providing point defence against air threats ranging from jet aircraft to helicopters.
