Third-party quality assessments, such as those conducted by J.D. Power and Associates and the vehicle reliability ratings issued by Consumer Reports, can dramatically affect the sales of vehicles that earn acclaim or disdain in the results. But earning good scores is complicated because of the wide variety of criteria considered. While "quality" probably refers to reliability and the consequent avoidance of time "in the shop" for most consumers, along with an absence of visible assembly errors on delivery, quality surveys consider a much broader set of criteria that encompass all forms of customer satisfaction for reasons unrelated to quality.
