Futuristic concept cars and a wide range of vehicles bristling with the latest technologies were the predominant themes at the 39th Tokyo Motor Show. However, executives at General Motors, Ford and Chrysler might well have been left wondering if the earthquake that shook parts of the city at the end of the first media day was a precursor to even rougher times ahead on the US car market. Given their recent difficulties in the domestic market, Japanese manufacturers have made no secret of the fact that they have ambitions to expand in overseas territories -particularly so in the US. The development holds serious implications for the Big Three, who have each seen Toyota, Honda and Nissan establish footholds on their doorsteps by rolling out competitively priced and fuel-efficient mid-size products in a segment they largely ignored.
