Go back 40 years and there was no such thing as a hatchback - it was saloon/sedan, or estate car/break/ station wagon if you wanted more room and versatility inside - the name tag dependent on where it was sold. Nowadays, the body options have proliferated to the point where the average user can customise the car of choice to his or her lifestyle. One of the most interesting developments of late has been the inexorable advance of the MPV; it started as an alternative to the medium-sized hatchback. Now, it is being adopted as the 'build-'em-taller' alternative to even B-sector superminis. And why not? Because road and parking space is critical in terms of length and width, but within reason, height is seldom a problem in congested city driving.
