Complex alliancing arrangements mean that GM's van-building plant in the UK has to compete not just with other GM factories, but also with plants of companies which are, at present, partners but which could later become rivals. Donna Sanford is two years into her five-year stint as plant director of GM Manufacturing Luton, formerly known as IBC Vehicles. Her task is to put the plant in the best position to win the next generation compact vans for the Vauxhall, Opel, Renault and Nissan brands, due in 2013.
