Ford engineers in the US are using driving simulators to test how well consumers interpret the graphics used in electric vehicles' energy efficiency displays. Feedback from the tests is helping the engineers to redesign some elements in the displays, making them much easier for consumers to understand. Part of EVs' success depends on how nominal range compares with what consumers get in everyday use. The displays reward and encourage energy-efficient driving but the tests have shown that not everybody gets them, and some graphics are preferred over others. The Focus uses butterflies to depict the vehicle's excess range beyond your recharging point destination; a circuit board icon was one of the alternatives, but was poorly received and then dropped.
