In 1995, the Ford Motor Company began to review its engineering computing strategy. The result was a decision to go for world- wide standardisation based on the I-DEAS Master Series. Richard Burman looks at progress three years down the line. In late 1995, Ford accepted that its old PDGS (product design graphic system) engineering software was incapable of meeting the demands of a world-class automotive manufacturer, based as it was on 2D (wire frame) technology. It was virtually impossible to take advantage of developments allowing a user to operate a fully integrated system with all the latest facilities. Ford's achievement of many of the benefits of integration reflect creditably on the staff who managed it in spite of the mix of systems in use.
