The assembly comprises one or more fords crossing the river, and one or more pipes (19,33) taking water from upstream of the ford to downstream. The upstream opening (18) of the pipe (19) is not positioned directly in line with the current but at right angles to it, or facing downstream. The pipe has a bend (30) in its upstream section. A channel running from the centre of the river-bed (17) to the opening in the pipe directs the water. The upstream opening has a filter made of metal grating. The pipe may also be extended in the river bed and have a section with holes in it for the water to drain through. There is a bend in the downstream section of the pipe. The pipe is buried beneath the riverbank (15) and the slope (20) leading to the ford (21).
