Gordon Murray MEDip, SAIMechE, AIED, Technical Director of McLaren Cars Ltd, talks to Alan Baker about the validity of the true super car as establishing 'the state of the art' in the automotive arena. Born in Durban in 1946, Murray gained a Mechanical Engineering diploma at Natal Technical College. He came to Britain in 1970, became a designer with the Brabham F1 team and was made Technical director in 1974, moving 11 years later to McLaren's F1 operation in the same capacity. During those 15 years he was responsible for some important innovations in suspension and braking systems, structures and ground effect. In 1990, at his instigation, McLaren set up a road-cars division and Gordon was appointed to his present position in it, masterminding the successful F1 super ear and indulging himself with the design of the Rocket 'four-wheel motorcycle'.
