For India, the worlds sixth largest electricity consumer, many things hinge on what transpires in 2012. With a consumption of 606 units per capita per annum and with demand growing yearly at around 8-9 percent, the country needs 1000 units per capita per annum by 2012.rnThus the Indian government came up with the "Power for all by 2012" programme, which seeks to cope with the country's surging power demand brought about by a combination of large population growth, rapid industrialisation and urbanisation, and increasing per capita income. The investment required is US$100 billion-rnUS$50 billion for generation; and another US$50 billion for transmission, distribution and rural electrification.
