Additional U.S. sanctions targeting Iran's banking and oil sectors went into effect June 28, further restricting Iran's ability to export oil and isolating the country from the international financial system. The U.S. sanctions, which are intended to pressure Iran to address international concerns about its nuclear program, are part of the fiscal year 2012 National Defense Authorization Act, which was signed into law Dec. 31. (See ACT, January/February 2012.)
