Minimised footprint The pupils, students and teachers who have the good fortune to study, research and teach in the Mechatronik Campus in Lienz are to be envied. Not just on account of the low student and pupil numbers but also because of the wonderful spatial conditions offered by the new building. Inside you feel at times like in a treehouse, whose extravagant form is ultimately derived from the narrow riverside site and several huge mature trees that had to be preserved, which meant that the building had to be erected around them. In 2014 the Viennese office of fasch&fuchs., which has plenty of experience in buildings for education, won the invited single phase competition for the Mechatronik Campus in Lienz, which was set up by the Office of the Tyrolean State government. Their project differed radically from the other competition entries. They daringly placed their winding, narrow, 160-metre-long building on slender reinforced concrete columns so that it would leave only a small footprint in the landscape. Only the "head" of the building touches the ground; it contains the large hall and - the building's pride and joy - the mechanical engineering laboratory, which are housed behind full-height glazed walls. This allows "normal" people to see what is going on there, explains Fadi Dohnal, scientific head of the university course in mechatronics.
