Jennifer Taylor's book is absolutely impressive. Taylor has correctly focussed on Maki's thinking and the themes of his work. She explains in her preface that she did not intend to replicate the 1997 retrospective of Maki's work, Fumihiko Maki: Buildings and Projects (Princeton Architectural Press), structured as projects interspersed with invited essays. By focusing on Maki's intellectual contributions Taylor rightly reveals Maki as one of "the great minds of our time" (Taylor's own words to me in 1986).
