摘要

Yonezawa City decided to revitalize the city with the power of culture, following the tradition of 400 years. In response to this decision we designed a "Book Plaza" for the citizens, where they can stay inside during the severe winter when most of outside public area is closed. In addition, we matched this library relatively small scale of the area that is equivalent to residential area scale. We designed flat wall columns in concentric grid. The space steps up into the central part. We stuck 100mm wood panel on the outside of this flat wall column. With this system, we can bring in natural light and create versatility. It also divides the building into smaller scale that resonates with the small scale of the area, and also provides snow eaves. The exterior wood is local cedar and functions as thermal insulation. The interior is fair faced concrete, which functions as heat storage. This system provides comfortable environment for the reading room surrounded with 200 thousand books.
