Christ Church Grammar School

Williams and Boag have just finished a prominent extension to the Christ Church Grammar School in South Yarra. The 'MP3' project consists of three storeys, with the lowest level disguised externally as a rendered plinth that opens to a sunken courtyard, and has a boundary wall at Punt Road. Part of the BER schools programme, the small building houses music practice, performance spaces and general learning rooms. The form of the building takes its massing cues from an adjacent stuccoed block and seems hunched protectively away from the onslaught of Punt Road and is sheathed in a metal-panelled cladding above the monolithic base. Panel joint lines are offset in a tiled formation giving it a shingled look, their texture and small-scale slotted openings combining to give the sense of a defensive compound from its downhill view.
